Shimco, which is known for its ability to custom manufacture quality shims, recently had the opportunity to produce a mating part in the form of a bearing retainer intended for use in a gearbox assembly. To achieve maximum efficiency, we designed and manufactured the work-holding fixture for the milling operation. We also handled the CNC milling, from the mill profile to the drilling, boring, mill ears and mill keyway as well as the heat treatment and marking.
The parts were 0.740 long with an outside diameter of 3.370 and manufactured in 4340 steel with a surface finish of 63RMS. In addition, we dipped the finished parts in rust-preventing oil. We also had magnetic particle inspection performed and dimensional inspection done on-site to ensure it met our aerospace clients specifications. Working from customer supplied-prints and a 2D CAD drawing, we produced 300 bearing retainers in nine weeks.
